Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Confirmed

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching rooftop levels and homes washed out by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to meteorological authorities, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is making cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency last week due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
