Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, walls and postboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Officers state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Officers then found multiple other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests suggest the liquid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are presently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for information.
A senior official said the attack rendered him without words and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist violent incident five years ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a assailant aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
